Providing Comprehensive, Hands-On Legal Help When You Need It

4 tips for helping your executor

An executor is someone who is tasked with ensuring that the instructions in your estate plan are carried out as intended . The processes they will observe during probate can be overwhelming. But you can make their work easier.

Here are four tips for helping your executor:

Make sure your documents are updated

Submitting outdated documents to probate can make your executor’s work more difficult – the process can be lengthier and more complex. Thus, you should ensure all your estate plan documents are updated.

If you change your medical power of attorney, name the new party. If you have a new child/grandchild, list them among beneficiaries. If you sell an asset, remove it from your will, and so on.

Further, keep your executor up to date with any changes made. This way, they can quickly identify an outdated document.

Let them know about the location of documents

You should inform your executor about the location of your documents, including the will and codicils, among others. Besides knowing the location, your executor should be able to access these documents. For example, if they are in a safe deposit box, your executor should have access to this.

Leave some cash

Your executor will assume their duties immediately after your death. Accordingly, they will need to take care of some expenses before the execution of your will, including attorney fees and funeral expenses. Consider leaving some cash to cover such costs without difficulties.

Don’t forget your digital accounts

If you have digital accounts, such as social media and financial accounts, provide your executor with usernames and passwords and instructions on what to do. Do you want to deactivate your accounts or keep them active after your death?

The above-discussed tips can make work more manageable for your executor. Legal guidance can also benefit them.
