Providing Comprehensive, Hands-On Legal Help When You Need It

What can you do to help prevent a truck accident?

As a driver, you know there is nothing you can do to control others. The only thing you can do is make the right decisions yourself.

As one of our Delaware readers, you’re probably familiar with what it takes to share the road with commercial vehicles. Even so, there could come a time when a driver makes a mistake that leads to an accident.

Here are just a few of the many things you can personally do to try to help prevent truck accidents:

  • Don’t drive in a trucker’s blind spot
  • Never quickly change lanes in front of a truck (make sure you leave enough space when doing so)
  • Don’t attempt to pass a truck in the right lane on the highway
  • Be careful when merging, as you don’t want to force a truck to brake quickly or make a dangerous maneuver to avoid your vehicle
  • Use your turn signal when pulling your vehicle in front of a truck
  • Don’t drive between two large trucks
  • Slow down to make space when a truck needs to merge or change lanes

Along with the above, you should always be watching for truckers who aren’t following the rules of the road. For instance, if you see a trucker who is texting or talking on a cellphone, keep your distance. This person has a greater chance of causing an accident.

If you ever find yourself dealing with the aftermath of an accident, don’t wait to call 911. Once you do this, you know that an ambulance and local police will arrive on the scene as quickly as possible.

Your health and well-being are top priority, but you’ll also want to learn more about your legal rights. This means understanding what went wrong and then taking the necessary steps in seeking compensation for your injuries and damages.
